As far as I am aware Mr Skinner was not on the planning commitee for Uckfield Town Council and his comments sink of sour grapes, leave Uckfield alone and just try to make a new life for yourself wherever you have gone!!!Sarah.

On 29th September Sarah Wrote"I have just read in The Sussex Express that Mike Skinner has moved away from Uckfield, what a result! Maybe now Uckfield can start getting back to normal without 'Mr Uckfield' sticking his oar in wherever and whenever he felt like it!"This was all about planning applications. During the time I was a councillor in Uckfield the amount of strange planning decisions went down. Now you can go back to the old "I've known him all my life...he only wants a small one" school of Planning Committee.(and then not declare an interest) Opportunities abound.. no wonder Sarah didn't like me sticking me oar in. From the extra bungalows in Mount Pleasant to Hamilton Palace to the houses behind Andertons.. Sarah can now have business as usual. Thanks Alastair, Jane and Chloe for making me aware this comment had been made.Sarah.

On the Notice board the Historical Review Press, Box 62, Uckfield TN22 is mentioned...this leads back to Wilson Press, Unit 30, Bellbrook Industrial Estate which is owned by nazi Anthony Hancock and which does the printing for the fascist British National Party as well as fascists all over Europe. Occasionally attempts are made to burn Wilson Press down.

first of all my condolences to everyone in the usa.im happy to see that more people are using the message board. What about some local issues, though. What do we think of the idea of building a new tesco on the town centre park? that will prevent tesco from flooding but what about the little businesses farther down the hill, like the market hall.

It's a lovely piece of writing Brad, and the sadness of it is that within hours the lives all those young people would have changed in some way. Many would be affected by the chaos and fear brought about by the attack on 'their' city, some would have lost friends and family, and God forbid, some of them may have been injured or even lost their lives. When you think of the death of 5,000 people you must also consider the tens of thousands of individuals who shared some part of their lives. For every one who died there is a parent, child, sibling, spouse, friend, workmate or whoever. Only they can really feel the pain. All we can do is offer our love and support as is says in Simone's message.I'm not clear about if you mean the clanging of the flagpole was some sort of warning. It occurred to me that too much conflict and tragedy is caused by flags and what they stand for. Now is the time to unite as if there are no borders and boundarys. We are all the same underneath, wherever we have the good or bad fortune to be born. All the very best to you and yours.Anne

We take too much for granted here in America. God, our flag and all that it represents, our happiness and freedom, our safety and security, our wealth and prosperity. This is how it was on my campus here in New York the day before the tragedy.IMAGES FROM THE DAY BEFORE SEPTEMBER 11It was an afternoon typical of the start of any other school year at Mohawk Valley Community College and it was brimming with scenes repeated at countless other places throughout the world that day. From where I sat in the Campus Center I was able to watch a steady stream of students hurrying in and out of the building marching to the hectic pace of preparedness, many with their new supplies in hand. Less fitful students were to be found sitting around tables throughout the cafeteria socializing and enjoying their lunchtime activities as the aroma of pizza, coffee and perfumes permeated the air alongside the clamor of their many voices. A gleeful greeting was heard which swiftly punctuated all the other words around it and was followed by the sight of joyous embracing, the universal signals of friendships rekindled. After a few minutes my attention was drawn towards a pretty Spanish-eyed co-ed who was gingerly chatting with her girlfriends. I was near enough to them as to hear her voice clearly but she spoke much too foreign and fast for my English-born ears to comprehend any meaning. As the girl sipped her coffee she fascinated me by the way her fingers twisted her long dark hair in a fashion that suggested to me the unawareness of her action. As I surveyed the room further I spied a young couple in the corner cuddling closely upon a single chair. It appeared to me that the young mans amorous behavior was causing his lady-friend to subdue his advances in a manner that spoke in a whisper of irresolution. They were too far away for me to listen to their conversation but I do recall from watching the encounter that she never stopped smiling. From my vantage point by the window I was able to look outside at the hundreds of students milling about in front of the buildings that surrounded the courtyard. Many of them were smoking cigarettes or drinking beverages, conversing with their friends between classes while a few others stood away by themselves. I observed one purposeful young man rearrange his backpack in a way that now brings to mind an academic soldier preparing for his duty. Other students with their textbooks forgotten beside them were gathering on the green indulging in the pleasure of the open spaces and basking in the sun. As I glanced further into the center of the courtyard I chanced upon a group of men mischievously but casually smoking marijuana. I could easily tell that it was a joint they were passing amongst themselves by the way each one would purse it to their lips as he puffed on it. As they enjoyed themselves within the warm buzz of their blue summer day an occasional cloud would eclipse the daylight, creating shadows that loomed overhead, and, at times crept across the grass towards the men as they joked and laughed seemingly oblivious to the shifting patterns of the light.Yes the day before September 11 was one filled with tender love and beauty, the ignorance and passion of youth, and a hint of silenced apprehension. But as I recollect it for you now the most significant image is certainly that of a sound that was distant and almost forgotten that day within the commotion around me. It was the sound of the random tempo of a rope and tackle clanging against a flagpole in unison with the changing winds that swirled about it. It seemed to be trying in vain to grasp the attention of the people that it had overlooked for so long, and its timber was not unlike, the ringing of a bell.

Everyone in this town seems to be having a dig at The Mayor Mike Skinner, why don't you all leave him alone, he will be gone soon and then you will have to find some other poor sod to have a go at! It's his wife I feel sorry for, whats she ever done to anyone ... enough!

Another BRILLIANT carnival, thanks to the Bonfire Society and especially the Watts family. Great music, great costumes, great atmosphere. What a fantastic event it is. It really does bring the whole town together in the way that no other event can. When one reads about all the other, smaller carnivals being cancelled because of the lack of helpers one realises just how lucky we are to have kept our special day.Long may it continue.

after reading Mike Skinners anally retentive comments about the 'official' Uckfield web site I've had a look and all I can say is - well it's all happening here guys! What's the point of a forum that you can't even read without the rigmarole of registering? Is that why it hasn't had an active topic for a fortnight?Great site here - how about a chatroom?Lizzie

When's the carnival? Why don't Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society have a website? Where are all the posters? Why aren't people given more encouragement to join in? I mean, it's great fun and all for charidee, mate, so why aren't more people involved? Why does it always seem to be the same people?Carnival is a great thing with so much potential. If everyone in the town gave a quid it would raise nigh on £13,000! However, I fear it doesn't raise even half that sometimes. People are always on about charity begins at home, well guys here's your chance! Let's drag Uckfield Carnival out of the 60's and start raising some big bucks!

I'm thinking of moving to Uckfield so I was pleased to find your site. As with all towns there are the less desirable areas, as I have two boys I would ideally like to avoid buying a house in said areas, unfortunatly the estate agents weren't forth coming with advice, what do normal people think?

Excellent site. Would like to take the opportunity to promote an extraordinary local employer offering flexible working conditions in the area. They give great support and training and are extremely co-operative and helpful even if you only want part time temporary work as a student. They have permanent full time staff as well who have been with them for years and cannot be recommended highly enough. Check out their site, http://freespace.virgin.net/homecomforts.ltd/ or give them a ring, 01825 762233 & good luck.

Did anyone see the Sussex Express article, Friday 1/6/01 regarding the new Pizza Express Restaurant in Uckfield? The plans look wonderful - glass extension, outside patio, roof garden. Wow! It's something Uckfield would benefit greatly from. Pizza Express restuarants are stylish, modern restaurants with excellent food at excellent prices. My family and I often visit the Lewes and Haywards Heath branches. Do any of you know if there have been any objections to the plans or whether it is likely to be allowed? I hope it is.I wonder what the effect on DiMarcos will be?

Your last contribution (and there has not been a single one for April) is from an American lingerie site......Someone, somewhere is entitled to surf where he/she wants (why am I so certain it is a he?) but it ain't nothingto do with Uckfield. Septic lingerie sites, teenage abuse and anonymous libertarians is all this site has on it. I would love this to have been the official one (or even better the unofficial one we all contribute to) but it just ain't on. Its sloppy. Uckfield is not "someone, somewhere" so I am sure you don't live here or probably are not happy doing so.

The Council comes along 2 years after this site was up and running and stamps the "Official Uckfield Site" on their home page. Then the mayor signs this guestbook saying provocatively "Uckfield now has a proper official website". Erm...who is being nasty? The more sites the better for Uckfield but I don't see how one site claiming to be the "official" and "proper" one over all others encourages this.

The Town Council do not think they own Uckfield, they just thought it would be helpful to set up a web site forresidents and visitors and there is room for more than one site, if people don't want to visit it, it is up to them, but why get nasty about it?
Linda

Since when was Uckfield a company or corporation? If the council decide to put up a site then they may want to call it the "official council website". The council do not own Uckfield, it belongs to the people as does the Internet. Their attitude is farcically pompous and I hope the folks of Uckfield support this site as much as they can. You are fortunate to have someone willing to put in the time and effort to provide an open, unbiased site for the community to express itself. The council and the Mayor will obviously have their own agenda. The more Uckfield sites the better but until they remove this "official" line I won't be going back.

As Linda says the website is free. The webmaster pointing to other sites and crying "conned" is excatly yhe opposite. The Uckfield-town.co.uk website is free to the town and produced by a company who have proved they can produce town websites... Well written and well marketed. This one has little but childish abuse and you have had 18 months to make something of it.Mike Skinner

Hi, there! My name is Heidi and I lived in Uckfield for 9 years from 1987 to 1996 and attended Uckfield Community College for all that time! I have been living in Cape Town, South Africa now for the last four years and must admit that I do miss Uckfield and my friends! I have been over for a couple of holidays since leaving, but I must say that it is fabulous that I can now have a look at my home town from my desk here in Cape Town! A few more pictures would improve the website dramatically - I want to see what the town looks like! Seems like it is changing a lot. If anyone out there knows me, please e-mail me and let me know how you are doing!

Kia Ora from New Zealand, My name is Belinda Blick and I am the great granddaughter of H.H.H.Hockey who was the headmaster of St Michael's School, in Uckfield. The school was relocated during WW2 to Barnstaple. I would like to make contact with anyone who has any information about the school, while it was in Uckfield. There may be some people in the Uckfield area who had relatives who attended the school. If so, I would be delighted to hear from them. My email address is nzbelle@yahoo.com Regards, Belinda Blick

I am very pleased to hear that Uckfield are proposing CCTV in the town!!! I feel that this has been a long awaited treat for Uckfield but would also like the scheme to cover the Uplands area where we live (unfortunately)!. I sincerely hope that the proposals are successful and look forward to a quieter town.
