Hi,
I am looking for any info on a Ruby Kathleen Bailey born 1921 uckfield to
Allen Hugh Bailey and Hilda Rose Haffenden. I believe Ruby had a
brother Hubert.
last address for Ruby is Norfolk Cottages Crowborough in 1943 and she was a
bookkeeper then. Thanks in advance - Christine
Uckfield residents. We can't let this Bird-in-eye housing
development go ahead. It's yet another example of the authorities destroying
open land that is the home to wildlife; a beautiful place to explore; and if
anything, more suited to grow local produce.
We don't need more cars, and more trouble parking in the area.
We don't need more building works and more ugly new developments.
We need to think about the future and preserve the environment.
The authorities don't seem care about our quality of living, or the environment
as long as they are making a nice profit from selling off this open land. The
development is currently in planning, so we don't have long to act. You can read
about it here:

My great grandmother, Louise Champion (married name Batchelor) had
cousins in Uckfield, probably Ridgewood. Alice, Alf and Vic lived somewhere near
a place called Piper's Nursery in the 1960s/70s. Louise has a
granddaughter in Canada. We'd both love to trace any relatives/friends who
remember Alice, Alf and Vic. If you can help in any way,

I
recently found a reference in my mother's documents to a friend of hers named
John Woodley. The address read as 2 Southfield Drive, Uckfield,
Sussex. The reference was from some time in the 1990's, I think. Can you help me
locate this person? FYI - my mother's name was Myrtle Burns and my
father's Dr.James Burns. They knew Mr. Woodley in Peterborough, England,
I believe. --Taodhg Burns
Dear Uckfield residents, Though not from Uckfield, I have lived in Lewes for
years and taught at Ringmer Community College for a similar time span. Lewes is
driving me mad, with all its poshness and pointless shops, so I have decided to
move to Uckfield. I have rented a nice little house near the rugby club, and was
feeling all relaxed about my move to a nicer place. Then I got on your website
and followed the link to the Times Online page about village websites. Uckfield
is represented by a squabble between a woman who doesn't want any asylum seekers
in her town, a man who is told off for being fat, and a woman who becomes
incoherently angry. Are you quite mad? Is this how you want Uckfield
represented?
Christ(mas).
Your new Uckfield co-habitee.
This is a real affair of the heart I need help with as I have just found
this website that could change my life! I’m looking for June Spacey,

I am interested in tracing the origins of a shop in High Street, Uckfield
(As it was called then, but think it was corner of Church Street), It was called
William Dendy's and registered as a Grocer & Draper in the Post
Office Directory. It is registered in the 1874 Census as being in the High
Street and I have met a lady who says her father-in-law worked there probably
100 years ago (making it the early 1900's) but looking on historical maps of
Uckfield I cannot trace when the shop was closed and redeveloped and would love
anyone to let me know if they have any details. Many thanks, Denise Mines
I am looking to contact Louise Benns originally from Crowborough, went to

The Hollybush Café
was situated next door to the old Drill Hall, approximately where "Kids Stuff"
is now. Before its demolition to make way for the Bell Walk development, the café
became the Uckfield Club for a number of years. I would suggest that more info
including photos may be available from Uckfield & District Preservation Society
(contact details online) or possibly from the secretary of the Uckfield Club,
which now operates from their current premises in Bell Lane. (01825 765313)

Harold Westphal, the godfather of the former Charlotte Heloise Waters,
has recently died and the executor of his will is trying to contact her. We know
that she lives in Nutley and often goes by the name, Charlie. We
also know that she has married, and Waters may be her maiden, not her married,
name. If anyone knows of her, could they please urge her to contact Daniel Blue,

I am trying to trace descendents of my grandfather's siblings and am wondering
if anyone can help me.
My great aunt Mary JONES of Laughton married Ebenezer HALL of East Hoathly in
1910. They had a daughter Edith Grace HALL born in 1911. She married Edward
Charles WISBEY in June 1935 probably in Uckfield as she was living there at the
time. Another great aunt Anne Elizabeth JONES married David Isaac NOAKES and a
great uncle Reuben JONES married Ethel Ellen KIDDLE, both families appear to
have Uckfield connections. I think that Reuben and Ethel JONES had three
children, Reuben , Peter and Gladys.
Are any of these names familiar to present Uckfield residents? Thank you for
your time, Brenda (nee JONES) Ontario, Canada
My husband's grandfather John Walder migrated from Uckfield to
Melbourne Australia in 1913 on the S.S.Osterley. His wife Eliza (formerly
Wren) and their four children followed on the Makarini. I am seeking
background on their families and Uckfield at that time as I am writing a book.
John's parents were Jesse and Esther Walder. They may have lived in East
Grinstead. Eliza's family were Moses and Mary Ann Wren. She was a
Jeffrey. They lived at Bakers Cottages Framfield Road Uckfield. They all
belonged to a religious group called The Open Brethren which may be why John and
Eliza migrated as they were very strong in establishing the Brethren and
Assemblies of God Churches in Australia. At one time John worked as a farm
labourer at Ladycross Farm East Grinstead. EILEEN WALDER

I am interested in
tracing any relatives of Charles Joseph Shorney (b.1889;Cannington,
Somerset) who died, aged 22yrs, on the Titanic & was my grandfather's uncle
or cousin.
I believe that at the time of Charles' death in 1912, his father Austin
Shorney, together with his 2nd wife Mary Ann (nee Naughton, b.
approx. 1885) & their 3 yr old daughter Greta (Margaret Mary) were
living at Oak Cottage, Herons Ghyll, Uckfield.
Austin's 1st wife, Charles' mother, Margaret (nee Nelson, b.1857,
Ireland) had died a few years earlier in 1905 of blood poisoning in Uckfield
Hospital.
The following year in June 1906, Austin had got married to Mary Ann Naughton at St
John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Heron's Ghyll.
In 1901 the Shorney family (Austin, Margaret & Charles) were living at 14
Heron's Ghyll Cottages, High Hurstwood, Buxted, Uckfield.
Can anyone give me any further information about either of these addresses? Are
they possibly one & the same? Do the address/es still exist?
I also know Charles attended Uckfield Grammar School.
I would be very grateful for any further information about any of the family
or their descendants, or any of the places mentioned. Many
thanks, Tracey Acton (JazzGirlUK @ aol.com)

I am researching the life of a gentleman by the name of Andrew Thomas
Fenby Young (1877-1962) who, after leaving school in 1894, studied
agriculture at 'Uckfield College'. I had assumed that this would be
either a specialist agricultural college or a college of further education,
rather than a school such as Uckfield Community College is now. I would be very
grateful if anyone has information about this college in the 1890's.
Thank you in advance for any help provided - Arthur Houldershaw
My name is Jim Hedges. When the 2nd world war broke out I lived in
London. I was 9 yrs old and on holiday with Mr and Mrs Phillips at their farm at
'Aucklands' in Pound Lane, Framfield.
My parents decided, for safeties sake to leave me with Mr and Mrs Phillips and
as a result I stayed with them for some time and went to school in Blackboys.
One night in 1940? four bombs were dropped, I believe three high
explosive and one oil bomb,
The oil bomb landed on 'Aucklands', the farm house and the place was burned to
the ground. I remember running down a blazing staircase and being left with
pyjamas and wellington boots.
No one was hurt and we were taken in for the rest of the night by Dr. Pollard?
who lived next door.
Certain parts of this incident are still bright in my mind but other parts are
blank. I cannot remember the date that this occurred and am trying to refresh
the details. Is there any local history society which could give any details. I
do hope that this rings a bell with someone and hope you can help.
Jim Hedges.
P.S. I now live in Nottingham
My great grandfather, George Diplock (married to Laura Loiusa

I am a freelance writer researching the life and times of 'Professor' Jimmy
Edwards for a forthcoming biography. I am presently concentrating on his
love of horses, as I know he owned a farm near Fletching that was run by
his older brother Alan. He rode to hounds, plus a keen polo player. Does anyone
remember him or have any knowledge about him whatsoever? I would be most
grateful for any help. I'm quite keen to get in touch with the local vicar, as I
believed Jimmy's buried in the local churchyard, apparently next to a German
fighter pilot. Also, keen to contact Alan and Biddy Fletcher and a
Nurse Betty too. Many thanks, Howard Watson [howard4964@yahoo.com]

Hi, my name is Narissa Brown and in 1989 my family moved from
Australia to Uckfield for a while where I went to school. I have since lost
contact with everyone. I am intending to live in the UK again towards the middle
of next year and would love to see some of my old friends who although I have
lost contact have never forgotten. Some are Laura Clarke - where the hell
are you? You left Australia and we lost contact again... Nicola Evans and
unfortunately the last names of the others escape me but they were Lisa and Jo?
I know that Laura's mum still lives in Uckfield but have no idea about the
others. If anyone can help me out or pass this on to those who can, I thank you.

papers were stolen about twelve years ago in a burglary and I lost touch with so
many people. Now that I am finally settled I would love to hear from "Fi"

G'day from Australia! I am undertaking family history research and
believe that my great grandfather, Robert Ellis may have been born in
Uckfield around 1860. He married Elizabeth Comber (from Cuckfield) around
1875 in London and thence migrated to Australia shortly after. The family
returned to the UK around 1893 and both parents died shortly after their return.
I would like to hear from anyone who may have information/knowledge of the Ellis
family in Uckfield and/or descendants. Regards Phillip Ellis <nbr@hunterlink.com.au>

Not knowing who to really address to: I will take my chances and hope
some one will read this that may fill me in on some old picture post cards I
have that have been stored away, by my Mother, who has passed on , and now have
been left to me. Some of them I believe date back to 1910 and 1911.They are of
Uckfield and PiltDown. I have really never heard of either place??? I gather she
had friends that either visited or lived in the area. I, am living in Winona, Mn.
and just find these very interesting. There are some of the Post Office in
Uckfield, High Street, [is this still there], the Grande Hall dated 1910 ,the
Piltdown golf course, different photos [shots] taken of that, the
"Peacock" at Shortbridge", near Uckfield. Anyway, there are about
30 different Real Photo Post Cards [this is what they have printed on the back]
If someone living in either of these places mentioned finds this of any
interest?????? please do E-mail me A.S.A.P. and we can further chat, of course,
to maybe answer some of my questions I have! Waiting to hear......

is planted out as a garden. Needs a few bedding plants in summer and just
keeping tidy and weeded. Thank you. My email address is angela@tailends.fsnet.co.uk

Hello! My Dad, Peter Cannon, would dearly love to meet up again
with his army buddy Peter Wickens. They haven't met since 1958!! Peter (Wickens)
was from a farming family in Uckfield; after army training in Catterick, they
both served in Fayid, Egypt between 1956 - 1958; they were in C Troop, Royal
Signals. If anyone can help to trace his whereabouts, please contact me:

Thanks in advance! Sally
We
are citizens of your partnertown Quickborn/Germany. On the occasion of
our festival in Quickborn last weekend we had the chance to see your wonderful
dancing group. As many other spectators we enjoyed it very much and were
surprised how professional the young people acted. Especially the costumes
looked wonderful.
The young actors didn't care about the bad weather. But we felt very sorry for
them and felt sad, that Quickborn couldn't provide any rain-protection.
Nevertheless we hope that they will come back again. Unfortunately we don't
know their address. Please be so kind and hand this thanks and greetings over to
them.
Many thanks in advance and best regards, family Behncke / Quickborn

The person I'd most like to hear from is Ben Compson, who used to be my
best friend at Secondary School, as well as Tim Stobart, Alison Davis and
Katy Farmer.
If any of you read this, e-mail me at AntonyWilkins@aol.com, It's been a

My name is Michael Anthony
Jacobs and I have lived in Brazil since emigrating from London in
1967. I am looking for some long-lost relatives who moved to Uckfield from
Barnes, London, S.W.13 some years ago. Could you give me some help regarding how
to go about locating her ? Classified ads, local newspapers, phone books,
etc. My cousin Jennifer née Cox who married George and has a daughter
named Esme Jane (I think) probably still lives in Uckfield.
Any help would be appreciated.
My name is John Collins. I
live in Australia and will be holidaying in UK and in particular will be in
Uckfield probably on 20 Sept 2000. or a day or two later.
My father was born at Morgans Yard in Uckfield on 28.2 1908. I have been able to
locate Morgans Yard as the High St north of Uckfield between what is now PST
Travel and Phillips shop. Does anyone know anything of the history of Morgans
yard.
My father was Edward Leslie Collins and grandfather, Albert Edwin
Collins(married Annie Richards at Uckfield 29.09.1906. Siblings of Albert
were James, Alfred, harry, lucy, Arthur andFrank. My grandfather/mother and
family migrated to Australia about 1924.
If I have any relations out there or anybody knows of the family, please Email

Hi, I am looking for
someone that I knew once, or still does live in Uckfield. Her maiden name is
Elizabeth Harris but became Elizabeth Baker. I know she is now
divorced but do not know whether she has remarried or is single again. When I
last saw her, approximately 8-9 years ago she had a son roughly 1 year old. Her
mother was called Betty. I believe for a time she also worked as a barmaid in
the Pub going out of town to Lewes, the one where the road forks, but I cannot
remember the name.
Elizabeth has scars on both forearms, a result of a car accident in 1982. I
was in the car as a passenger with her. She would know me as "Lou" If
anyone knows Liz please pass this on to her or reply to:-
andy.lewis@airrep.com Many
thanks in advance for any help in tracing Liz.
Hi, there! My name
is Heidi and I lived in Uckfield for 9 years from 1987 to 1996 and
attended Uckfield Community College for all that time! I have been living
in Cape Town, South Africa now for the last four years and must admit that I do
miss Uckfield and my friends! I have been over for a couple of holidays
since leaving, but I must say that it is fabulous that I can now have a look at
my home town from my desk here in Cape Town! A few more pictures would
improve the website dramatically - I want to see what the town looks like!
Seems like it is changing a lot. If anyone out there knows me, please
e-mail me and let me know how you are doing!

Kia Ora from New Zealand, My name is
Belinda Blick and I am the great granddaughter of H.H.H.Hockey who was
the headmaster of St Michael's School, in Uckfield. The school was relocated
during WW2 to Barnstaple. I would like to make contact with anyone who has any
information about the school, while it was in Uckfield. There may be some people
in the Uckfield area who had relatives who attended the school. If so, I would
be delighted to hear from them. My email address is nzbelle@yahoo.com Regards,

I am the grand-daughter of Grace
Leah Louise Duplock Goodbrand who was born in Uckfield in 1894. I
am currently researching the Duplock line for my family history and want to
contact any Duplocks (Diplocks) who are still living in the area. I gather
that there were at least two Duplock families living in Uckfield during this
time. The family I am interested in is the Thomas Duplock-Harriet Steveson
family who lived in Uckfield from 1885-1910 approximately. I would not be
surprised though if the two families are related though and so am interested in
contacting any Duplocks in the area. If there are any family members who
are not on the web, I would be willing to contact them by snail-mail. I would
also like to know if there are any history books available on Uckfield or on the
Duplock family. Can anyone help? I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada (where
Grace immigrated to) and will be visiting Sussex in September. I'd like to
visit with any family who are still in the area.
My e-mail address is slaine@cadvision.com.
Hope to hear from you.

Hello, I would just like to say
that I read through the guest book in disbelief at what some people had written.
I work in the computer industry and live in Uckfield. I have used this site for
a long while now and find it very useful.I would just like to let you know that
in my opinion the website is brilliant and please do not change it, and do not
listen to the uneducated youth of Uckfield and their immature comments.
